It’s the beginning of a new school year, which means time to buckle down, but all work and no play can make kids very cranky.
While September is the month to get homework habits refined and bath and bedtime routines down to a science, I know if all I do is crack the whip and offer no outlet outside of school, I’ll have two very miserable kids on my hands.
Having an outlet where my kids can put their passion into, outside of academics, is incredibly important for their overall mental health (and ultimately mine, too).
When my son, who enjoyed taking an after-school karate class last year, put on his white uniform and wowed his dad and me with his series of kicks and poses, I realized these classes gave him an extra boost of confidence in his abilities.
So once again, I’ll be saddling up the car with snacks, kids, bags overstuffed with extracurricular paraphernalia and enrolling them in some classes.
If you’re a parent looking to indulge your kids in an extracurricular sports activity this school year, and you are kicking around the possibility of JOINING one yourself keep reading for one of my new favorite resources: newyorksportsconnection.com
So just what is : www.newyorksportsconnection.com ? It is a FABULOUS resource created for parents of sports-playing kids in NYC, a one-stop shop for all sporting needs. It was created by a stay-at-home-dad who saw that parents weren’t aware of the many sports options available in NYC and an effort to help keep parents from missing deadlines to sign their kids up for the programs of their choice.
How it works:
#1 Parents who are looking for sports programs for their kids can search through a directory of over 600 organizations offering 50 different sports across the city and for those of you in Staten Island- they’ve got MANY offerings!!)
#2 Parents will also have the ability to write comments/reviews for programs- one of my favorite ways to truly get a sense of a program and if it is a good fit for my kid is by reading through other parents’ experiences and remarks ( I can’t wait for this feature to be introduced at www.newyorksportsconnection.com
#3 NEVER miss a deadline to sign up again!People who register for New York Sports Connection weekly newsletter receive alerts on upcoming tryouts, registration/sign-up periods, school and summer break camps and other sports-related events in the city.
#4 Special needs resources. Parents can peruse their vast directory of programs for children with special needs http://newyorksportsconnection.com/find-a-sport/special-needs-options/
#5 A list of sports-focused non-profits so those who want to volunteer their time can find a program that excites them http://newyorksportsconnection.com/resources/community-service/
#6 Profiles and Q&As with NYC youth-sports personalities and profiles of local sports-focused non-profit organizations.
#7 Resources also include a list of skating rinks in the city, where to get rackets re-strung, baseball/softball batting cages and more. and an extensive list of local sporting goods stores. Website visitors can find private coaches, buy and sell used athletic equipment, and connect with others via the community forum. And most importantly the website which is translatable into different languages! This go-to, online hub for both parents of sports-playing kids and adult athletes in New York City is TRULY a must for Overwhelmed Parents and the New York Sports Connection weekly newsletter offers the latest information on upcoming tryouts, deadlines, summer and school-break camps, sports clinics, specials events, and local news stories.
NYC-based sports organizations that would like their information listed or want to learn how to enhance information already on the site should contact firstname.lastname@example.org
Still not convinced– Check out this past week’s NEWSLETTER New York Sports Connection weekly newsletter and SIGN UP all you have to do is enter name and e-mail, no security questions to stumble on!!
And below is the newsletter that went out this past Tuesday so you can see what they look like.
