The truth is if you randomly walked up to any woman on the street and asked her if there was anything she would like to change about her appearance- chances are you’d get a laundry list of tweaks she would like to make from head to toe. And while celebrities might have many of us believing that getting cosmetic procedures are easy and breezy- the fact is any kind of medical procedure should be NOT be entered into lightly or on a whim and requires careful research and consideration.
And if you asked any cosmetic surgeon, behind closed doors, if she has gotten her fair share of patients who ask for ridiculous procedures, expect miracle results and probably need to make a beeline for a psychiatrist’ office prior to stepping foot into their office there is a good chance she would spill the beans on things she WISHES patients knew prior to coming in for a consult. So before you make an appointment with a surgeon for a consult-( and I would recommend you schedule that consult with a doctor from Smart Beauty Guide) here are few things you might want to keep in mind aka –things your surgeon might not be telling you (but wishes you knew!).
#1 “You really do not need to have your breasts made larger or your breasts are large enough.” According to Michael J. Brown M.D. an American Board of Plastic Surgery Board Certified physician, Inc. at The Loudoun Center for Plastic Surgery he has had some women come in with beautiful full breasts who no matter what he advises simply want bigger cup sizes. Dr. Brown wishes patients understood that the grass is always greener, unfortunately he also realizes that if he says no, these women will simply go somewhere else and unfortunately it is hard to change a woman’s mind in this regard.
#2 “You can't get a better result. No need for more surgery.” What Dr. Michael Brown wishes he could tell patients who come in and continually have unrealistic expectations of what can be achieved through cosmetic surgery that, ultimately, yet another surgery will not achieve their goals.
#3 “You will have some discomfort.” According to Nicholas Sieveking M.D. a Board Certified plastic surgeon at he wishes that patients knew and that there wasn’t a general perception in society that cosmetic surgery is somehow less physically taxing than regular surgery, since it’s elective and aesthetic in nature. In fact he notes that some patients might be surprised by how extensive it can be for example; that a tummy tuck extends from the rib cage all the way down to the pubic bone. Dr. Sieveking further explains that some surgeons not only minimize the level of pain, but the length of time needed for recovery as well.
#4 “You don’t necessarily need a lip injection or a chemical peel”. Yes, says Cosmetic Surgeon Dr. Anthony Youn of the forthcoming book The Age Fix: A Leading Plastic Surgeon Reveals How to Really Look 10 Years Younger there are some patients who can opt for a topical lip plumper instead of a lip injection. There are two types of lip plumpers; irritant and moisturizing. The moisturizing lip plumpers function by aggressively hydrating the lips. Dr. Youn also says that some patients can forgo thein-office chemical peel and tighten their skin with a home chemical peel with items from their fridge. Just mix lemon juice, orange juice, and plain unsweetened yogurt; the combination of these can provide for a mild AHA Alpha hydroxy acid peel.
#5 “You can trade a brow lift for a brow wax or Botox.” Yes says Dr. Nicholas Sieveking Board Certified plastic surgeon Nashville. TN you can avoid a costly procedure! As we age, our eyebrows droop, causing us to look tired, says Dr. Sieveking. Years ago, this might have been improved with an expensive surgical brow lift. While effective, many people who consider this costly surgery could look almost as good with a $30 or less brow wax. The key is to instruct your aesthetician to remove the hairs on the under surface of the eyebrow. This opens up the space above your eyelids, making you look more alert and refreshed. Just make sure she doesn't remove too much; sometimes eyebrows don't grow back! And a single 5 minute special Botox treatment by an experienced plastic surgeon can get your eyebrows lifted, restore a nice feminine arch to them and make your eyes look rested and refreshed for 4 or 5 months. In fact, according to Dr. Sieveking, with “no incisions, no scars, no downtime, and minimal cost – Botox is the clear winner for lifting eyebrows!
#6 “Basic skin care like drinking plenty of water, diet with plenty of fresh vegetables/fruits, avoiding smoking, using sun block daily, etc is better for the skin than any Botox, laser, or facial filler treatments.” Yes – this all true says Houtan Chaboki, MD Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon
#7 “We can help slow or turn back the clock, but we can't stop the clock for natural aging process. We're not magicians and can only improve a person's appearance, not necessarily dramatically change it.” In other words Houtan Chaboki, MD Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon, wishes more patients had realistic expectations when it comes to cosmetic surgery.
#8 “You will require more than one operation, guaranteed!” According to board certified Beverly Hills surgeon Dr. Renato Calabria many plastic surgeons will depict a perfect scenario where they fail to mention the fact that it is guaranteed that a patient will have to replace their breast implants at least once in their lifetime if not more. Implants don’t last a lifetime like some plastic surgeons may imply. Ninety percent of breast implants are leaking after ten years, and therefore they need to be replaced periodically.
#9 “Large breast implants have a higher incidence of problems!” Large breasts seem to be popular in today’s world, notes board certified Beverly Hills surgeon Dr. Renato Calabria. A lot of women seek to reach very large dimensions on their breasts and plastic surgeons are trying to accommodate their wishes placing breast implants that are definitely too big for them. It is not only a matter of proportions but large implants cause more complications like rippling but more importantly the excessive weight will cause the breast skin to stretch much more. This will eventually become so evident that the breast will look deformed. Anything more than a C cup breast will require, with time, a breast lift.
#10 “The breast implants may be masking a potential breast cancer.” Even if we are getting very sophisticated with radiological imaging, there is no question that the breast implants may cover partially some of the breast tissue therefore not visible to the test, notes board certified Beverly Hills surgeon Dr. Renato Calabria If the breast implant is over the pectoralis muscles, it is worse. If it is under the muscles, it could be up to 10 to 15 percent of the breast tissue covered by the implants. It is true, though, that women who have breast implants have a lower incidence of breast cancer for the simple reason that they are monitored more often.
Bottom line jokes Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeon Richard Ellenbogen M.D., “ You misunderstood me lady I perform mommy makeover not mommy take over, ” ultimately what most cosmetic surgeons won’t tell you but wish they could is that a procedure won’t change your entire life. The real inner work, happiness and contentment needs to come from you. And while some of the above statements are certainly cheeky and said in jest what all these cosmetic surgeons wish you knew is that any procedure you elect to have will have consequences so you must be informed, do your research and always use a surgeon you feel comfortable with who will explain the whole procedure and follow-up care.
