Sometimes you meet a celebrity- and in your head- you immediately think– THIS IS someone who I could go on Starbucks runs with. That’s how I felt when I sat down to chat with Busy Philipps in Madison Square Park where we spun Banana Boat’s DIGITAL Wheel of FUN ( check it out online here) and she chatted getting her kids to don sunscreen minus the drama, her personal style and helping her kids have a the best summer!
#1 She Admits that Child number 2 is along for the ride- which is EXACTLY how I felt about my second kid Jackson. I love him to death but I definitely fretted less over him and it’s like he knew he had to step up and make stuff happen for himself! My girl Busy confided in me that her second child, Cricket, is a relaxed and chill kid too and has the second child thing down!
#2 She got great advice from her CougarTown co-star Courtney Cox ( which I TOTALLY agree with) Relationships save the special for your husband- that you don’t get complacent about your relationship. So many of us are all animated with our co-workers and then when we get home and our spouse asks us how our day was we give them ONE WORD ANSWERS. She says after seven years of marriage and two kids she is really trying to be mindful to find ways to connect with her husband. That is not to say that she doesn’t have her own life and her own interests – but she says, if you can find things to do together- and hobbies you enjoy- it’s a game-changer for your relationship. Bottom line: I love how honest she is about the WORK it takes to keep your relationship going- especially after kids and that she just gets it.
#3 She makes a competition out of putting sunscreen on her kids ( to keep the drama to a minimum). We’ve all been there trying to get our kids to put on their sunscreen, while they kvetch and moan and if that sunscreen gets in their EYE- FORGET IT! You might as well pack up for the day and go home. So Busy got smart and devised a plan to get her daughter to don sunscreen like a boss. She squirts a dollop of sunscreen into her daughter Birdie’s hand and says, ” I’m timing you, if you can get this sunscreen all over your body in X amount of time you get a prize” . Usually said prize is a leftover Easter egg with a little toy inside. She admits her daughter loves competition- and when she invites her friends over the race to get sunscreen on continues! And Busy adds, ” Sure sometimes these competitions end with someone in tears but not everyone gets a trophy right?!”
Another reason I love her is that she agrees Banana Boat’s SUNSCREEN SPRAY IS A GAMECHANGER!!!! ( it really is! I tell my son put on your sunglasses and then I SPRAY AWAY!)
#4 She loves Vintage fifties style House dresses and Jean jackets. She loves dresses of a certain length, ones that have pockets and pretty buttons) and jeans jackets. If you look at us in that picture above- well it’s like we are BESTIES!
#5 She admits that she is not one of those women who can pop out a baby and five weeks later look amazing. When I told her how fantastic she looked she said, ” I am not one of those women who can eat baklava every night, all that filo dough and pine nuts, and not gain a pound!” Like all of us real moms and women she agrees that juggling it all is anything but easy and doesn’t pretend it is- and it is just one more reason to love her.
For the record I told her I think those women are all smoke and mirrors , but she told me she personally knows women like that- that they REALLY EXIST. I wanted to pry and ask for names- but I restrained myself.
#6 She is on one of my most favorite TV shows- EVER- Cougartown and is truly so graeful that it was picked up by TBS and that they are getting a final season to properly wrap up their characters story lines ( since there are so many shows that simply VANISH).
#7 For her and her family Summertime is about being OUTDOORS at the pool . She is not about being all fancy and complicated, she is pretty simple and down to earth and so grateful. She says her best summer is baout being at the pool, applying sunscreen 30 minutes before she and her kids hit the water( she is VERY SERIOUS ABOUT SUNSCREEN) and spending time with friends and family. She feels INCREDIBLY LUCKY.
