9 Ways You and Your Kids Can Celebrate Earth Day Everyday!
In my opinion the greatest gift we can give our kids is a future- and a place where they can safely pursue their dreams. This is why as parents- we need to celebrate Earth Day EVERYDAY and here are nine ways families can celebrate!
#1 Start a Compost pile. Composting is a simple way to add nutrient-rich humus which fuels plant growth and restores vitality to depleted soil. It's also free, easy to make and good for the environment.
#2 Adopt a Local park, stream or beach and CLEAN IT UP! There is (unfortunately) not usually a shortage of areas nearby that need your help. Scout around for a location that you'd like to see improved. These areas may be stream banks, a lakeside beach, an abandoned lot with overgrown weeds, a littered park or recreational area, or a trashed roadway. When selecting a site, keep in mind accessibility, rest rooms, and the presence of poison ivy.
- If on private land, you will need to get the owner's permission.
- If on public land, make your intentions known to the town or state agency responsible for the property. Get started here!
#3 Pull weeds instead of spraying chemicals! Here's a GREAT post to help you get started!
#4 Buy a LIVE Christmas Tree to plant outside.
#5 Help Plant Trees in your area. Here's a great guide http://www.arborday.org/trees/righttreeandplace/
#6 Turn off the LIGHTS and TV when you are NOT in the room!
#7 Use Cloth Napkins instead of paper napkins.
#8 Have a garage Sale and Donate the money to an Environmental organization.
#9 Turn off the water while brushing your teeth. By wasting less water we leave more water for wildlife, plants and trees.
