All moms are heroes in my eyes, but some moms, well… some moms are inspirational in ways that go above and beyond the ordinary.
Bright Starts, the award winning infant toy company, recently honored one such mom, Mary Ann Wasil Nalin, at their “Mother of Invention” event at Manhattan’s New Museum. Celebrity guest Marcia Cross was on hand to help present Wasil Nalin, the Bright Starts 2011 Pink Power Super Mom, with a $20,000 donation towards her organization, The Get In Touch Foundation. Wasil Nilan was nominated for this honor by her two daughters and was selected from 8 finalist all of whom were chosen for their braveness throughout their battle with breast cancer.
Wasil Nilan’s journey, which included chemotherapy, a stroke, and 8 surgeries, lead her to create The Get In Touch Foundation, the mission of which is to inspire “gals of all ages to “Get In Touch” with their bodies, information, and each other in our crusade against breast cancer.” The Get In Touch Foundation works with schools to education young girls, starting in 5th grade, on the importance of breast self exams. The lessons are taught annually through 12th grade, giving girls the foundation they need to practice breast self exams for life.
In addition to honoring Wasil Nilan, the “Mother of Invention” event showcased “vignettes of antiquated baby toys and gear juxtaposed with Bright Starts’ contemporary, groundbreaking products.” One innovation that caught my eye was the InGenuity Washable Playard. It only takes one round of spit up on the pack and play before a parent starts wondering why no one makes a playard with a removable, washable fabric. Well, with the InGenuity line, Bright Starts has done just that.
Also new to the Bright Starts product line are the Having a Ball toys, the company’s first move into products for toddlers. My 15 month old definitely had a ball checking out these new products. The Get Rollin’ Activity Table kept her entertained while I finally had a chance to taste the delicious garlic shrimp that kept passing by. Other products in the line are the Pop & Roll Roadster, the Cluck & Learn Barn, and the Alphabet Pop Top, which should all be available in the fall.
