Being a mother, in my opinion, has little to do with pregnancy. I think the real in-the-trenches work happens once you have that baby in your arms- whether like me you physically passed one through your lady parts and also had the distinct pleasure of being sliced open like a bagel and having another one pulled from your womb- or whether you got the call that a baby needed a home and you knew she was your destiny- she was your child.
This is not at all to say that those of us who have weathered nine months of being told that “you look like Vince Lombardi (yes my husband thought it was funny to nickname me Vince when I was preggers with our first child) or you struggled with heartburn and could not sleep for nine straight months because you kept worrying that you might end up on your belly or back and you couldn’t get comfortable on your side, don’t deserve a present when you finally birth that human as you shout at our partner “I can’t believe you did this to me.” And for those of us who have waited and planned and have poured so much of our hearts and beings into finalizing that adoption of our child-(the one who was literally born in our heart) when we finally have that baby in our arms- well it is akin to giving birth as well.

And it is once we have that child that real motherhood kicks in. Motherhood is getting up at 1am to calm a colicky baby and blasting Bill Withers “just the two of us” on your speakers and dancing because it is the ONLY way to get your child to stop moaning. Motherhood is watching that child take their first steps and wanting to be able to anticipate when they will fall so that they never need to feel even an iota of pain. Motherhood is watching that same cartoon show ten times in a row and clapping and singing along with your child because even though you’d choose sticking pins in your eyes over watching said show- the smile it brings your child makes it all worthwhile and even palatable.
Motherhood is about sending your child to their first day if school and hearing them wail and cry for you, and waiting for two hours at the door until you finally hear their sobs subside. Motherhood is wanting to break down that door and take them home-as soon as your hear their cries- but staying put behind that door because you know the best possible thing for them is to have experiences outside your mommy and me cocoon. Motherhood is watching your child navigate friendships and wanting so badly to protect and prevent them from every feeling unloved and unwanted by a peer- but knowing that sometimes you can’t make it all better.
The truth is motherhood is a journey- from the moment that little hands grasps yours which is why I am so excited and honored to be working with LYSOL to celebrate a mother’s natural protective instinct, honoring that a mother’s first priority is always the safety of her children – whether she is a bear, a monkey, or a person!

And this weekend you and your kids can head over to Brooklyn Bridge Plaza Date: Sat. 5/20 & Sun. 5/21 Time: 9AM – 6PM where LYSOL is kicking off their PROTECT LIKE A MOTHER open air, pop-up installation with larger-than-life animal structures to celebrate the protective instincts of motherhood special Lysol exhibit celebrating the greatest guardians of all: mothers. What a wonderful idea for a campaigner! It’s true, no one protects like a mom!
Yes, I love this! Moms are definitely the protectors! If mama ain’t happy, nobody is happy! Lysol rules!
I really like the way you incorporated the brand into this post. It was very touching! I also love lLsol and use it to protect my family. Great job 🙂
I can’t even imagine how the connection between a mother and a child could be, I bet it’s really intense x
No one protects like a mother does her child! Like a mama bear protecting their cubs!
This sounds like a great campaign! There really is an amazing bond between a mother and her child and children, although the same can be said for many dads too.
I think that Lysol exhibit was pretty cool…all of the designs made for awesome photo opportunities. This sounded and looked like a fun event to attend.
