Common Home Issues You Might Deal with This Summer (And How to Fix Them)

May 29, 2018 by Melissa Chapman 15 Comments

With summer on its way, you may start to notice some issues in your home. These issues aren’t referring to trying to figure out what to do with your kids while you’re at work. They have to do with your home itself and if they aren’t taken care of, you could have some major issues. Keep reading for Common Home Issues You Might Deal with This Summer (And How to Fix Them)

Common Home Issues You Might Deal with This Summer (And How to Fix Them)

There are many common household-related issues you might experience during the summer months. A termite infestation is one of them. According to Kill Termites Guide, the nuisance can eat through your house, causing thousands of dollars in damage each year. But there are some things you can do to prevent them from taking over.

Termites never rest as they’re always eating 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Because of this, it might be hard to locate where they are at a certain time since they’re always on the move. A really effective way to rid your home of all of the termites is to use subterranean trench. Purchase a non-repellent termiticide and dig a trench near the exterior of the impacted wall. Fill the trench with the solution but make sure you’re doing it slowly and evenly. This treatment will kill the creatures as they leave your home and will stop new ones from entering.

Since it tends to get really hot in the summer, you and your family will probably be drinking a ton of water. The water can cool you right down, but if it’s packed with lead or high levels of calcium and magnesium it can cause some serious health issues. This is actually pretty common in many homes all across the United States. In fact, 85% of American homes have hard water.

To treat hard water, Home Plus Water says you can use an ion exchange water softener. The ion exchange will replace calcium and magnesium ions in the water with a sodium ion. This traditional technique is demonstrated by different filters and softeners you can find at any hardware store.

Mold is another thing you might deal with this summer. Even though summertime promises us days of sunshine and warm weather, we’re also (hopefully) going to see some rain. The moisture of the rain can actually build up inside of your home and create mold. And unfortunately, mold can lead to many medical conditions including allergies or respiratory illnesses. According to Allergy and Air, you can eliminate the moisture by using a dehumidifier or air conditioner. These machines will take in the warm, moisture-ridden air and circulate it out as dry, cool air. If it’s a cooler day, open your windows and use fans to push the moisture out of your home.

As a homeowner, it’s inevitable that you’re going to deal with issues during the summer. You might have termites invading your space, mold growing, and hard water coming out of your faucet.  When it comes to Common Home Issues You Might Deal with This Summer (And How to Fix Them) these problems can easily be fixed, which means you can get out there to enjoy your summer.

Termites definitely scare me. My house is older, so I really need to have someone come out and check for me this summer.

Great information. I don’t have to worry about humidity in our home, but I DO have a fear of termites. Those were a problem for us in the past.

Termites are so stinkin scary! I remember when we sold our home they did a check. We passed it but I was so scared there would be a chance we didn’t.

Mold is the worst, whether it be inside or out. We get the green mold by the a/c in the summer months (outside, on the house).

Thank you for these tips. My eldest son suffers from allergies and he always has a humidifier in his room. Dry air and dust are his worst enemies! I think I should get more for the other areas of the house.

It’s not easy to maintain a home especially since we go through so many seasons and we have to prepare for each one. I think this is a good guide for homeowners though.
