My 11 year old son, is PAINFULLY THIN. He’s that kid you see in the grocery who has legs that appear to be the size of toothpicks and you worry that perhaps his legs might just collapse under too much weight. So being that he has an appetite the size of a tiny ant and is highly decisive about what he will and won’t ingest-when we finally find something he likes– well we’ll indulge him until he cries UNCLE (which he NEVER does– this kid has a penchant for finding a food he likes and sticking with it until it is either discontinued or– as I will soon explain- ROTS HIS TEETH ).
Somehow, some way- my son became utterly enamored with Pomegranate juice. He drank it three times a day and with each and every one of his snacks. And of course, as his parents, we will gladly accommodate any request he makes to ingest something other than air. Personally I figured it’s fruit- I always got the low sugar kind and thought I was doing a GOOD THING for my boy. Until I took him for his yearly dental checkup at which time we were notified in no uncertain terms that this boy of ours needed MAJOR dental work- five cavities filled and a root canal on a cavity that had gone too deep. My husband looked at each other cluelessly- and we both racked our brains- unclear of how our boy could have amassed this level of cavity infestation. And then we told our dentist who asked us what he drank. And his response… YOU SHOULD ONLY BE GIVING YOUR KIDS WATER…and ever since that fateful day at the dentist’s office we have been an all water all the time kind of family.
Not a single one of us, including my son, is ever without a trusty water for him and a seltzer bottle for me by his and my side respectively and this has rubbed off on my husband and daughter as well. Of course, as long as we keep going to the store and replenishing that ever- present supply of liquid, we are happy and stay well-hydrated and refreshed.
While in our family having our favorite beverages by our sides has become a habit, having healthy, sugar-free options is even more important. In other words, not only is it necessary to have my liquids at the ready but it is important that they be healthy, sugar-free beverages. Which is why I had to share the new ReadyRefresh by Nestlé service which essentially delivers a variety of healthy drinking choices when you want them.
So the real question is, just how important is it to make healthy choices when it comes to your beverage choices? Today, beverages account for 47% of added sugars in the US American Diet and more than 13% of calories consumed per day. The newly released 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends that the primary beverage consumed should be either calorie-free – especially water – or should contribute beneficial nutrients such as fat-free and low-fat milk and 100% juice. Did you know that replacing a single 12-ounce, 140 calorie sugar sweetened beverage with water each day for a year can cut more than 50,000 calories from your diet? When it comes to your home, you want to feel confident that you are always making the best choices for you and your family, especially when it comes to health.
However keeping those healthy choices always on hand has always been the problem. The constant treadmill of going to the supermarket to constantly replenish our supply of sparkling waters and keeping healthy drinks for everyone in our house can be exhausting. When it comes to having a supply of healthy drinks in our house we most certainly have FORO in my family FEAR OF RUNNING OUT.
In fact I’ll never forget that morning, several weeks ago, when I went downstairs to get my coffee and my bottle of seltzer only to find that there was NO SELTZER left. Unbeknownst to me, my daughter had finished the last bottle in the case we stash under our kitchen table and had not bothered to share this tiny fact with me. Suffice it to say I went into full on PANIC MODE. I simply cannot function without my morning seltzer and coffee (in fact I bring a case of seltzer with me whenever I go on vacation or even for a night at a relative’s house). So there I was at 6:30 in the morning about to cry and basically had NO choice but to jump in my car and make a quick trip to the nearest deli to buy a very overpriced bottle of seltzer so that I could get my morning fix. When I say we have MAJOR FORO in our family– that is nothing short of the TRUTH!
The fact of the matter is that buying bottled water by the individual bottle means you’re spending way too much time restocking at the grocery store. Buying in bulk keeps your shopping trips infrequent, but those cases are so heavy, and big box stores are energy-sapping circuses. With that dreaded trip to the store looming, a sense of anxiety takes over. As your bottled water supply dwindles, you begin to hoard those last few bottles for your kids, your spouse or even just a thirstier moment.
To study the “Fear of Running Out” (FORO) phenomenon and raise awareness around the ReadyRefresh service, ReadyRefresh worked with four families to conduct a two-week, in-home experiment which tested behavior when the supply of an everyday essential like bottled water begins to dwindle. The experiment demonstrated changes in the family’s behavior and ability to adhere to healthy drinking habits, while also highlighting the benefits of maintaining a convenient and steady supply of water in one’s home.
During the first week, each family received a large supply of water (a combination of 5-gallon dispensers and bottled water) through Nestlé’s water delivery service, ReadyRefresh. The supply was designed to meet the water needs of each household for the week, with a variety of sizes and flavor offerings.
At the beginning of the second week, the ReadyRefresh supply was decreased, leaving just enough water for adequate hydration. The family monitored and reported on changes in household behavior like interruptive runs to grocery or convenience stores, increased consumption of juice or soda, and overall changes in mood or activity.
In tandem, ReadyRefresh conducted a survey of 4,000 individuals across the United States to collect statistics around water consumption habits and the FORO phenomenon.
- More than half of all surveyed (52%) experience FORO at least once a week.
- 69% of those surveyed experience feelings such as stress, anxiety and worry when household items start to run low.
- 69% of survey respondents run low on everyday household items at least once a week.
As we all now know thirsty choices aren’t always smart choices, and the lack of healthy beverage options often means your family is reaching for what’s available, which could be sugary sodas or juices. When it comes to your home, you want to feel confident that you are always making the best choices for you and your family, especially when it comes to health.
Which brings me back to ReadyRefresh a customizable beverage delivery service that provides your family with a variety of leading bottled water brands in assorted sizes and flavors like Poland Spring (still and sparkling), Nestlé Pure Life, Perrier, San Pellegrino and Acqua Panna which makes it easy to bring a little more health into your home.
