I live in New York City so when I see a celebrity I usually pretend like I don't see them. I try to act all cool and not get in their face and gush and recite lines from their films and tell them that I would stalk them if I had more free time on my hands. I also have done my fair share of celeb interviews and meet n' greets and at 40 years old, I'm kind of at a point in my life both personally and professionally that unless I am GAGA for said TV show, film or celeb- there is very little that can get me off my loveseat and out of my pajamas. Add to that these NYC winter snow storms which have essentially brought us New yorkers to our knees ( while Minnesota LAUGHS AT US for being such sissies) if I also have to drive in tundra -like conditions to meet a celeb- well you know- FUGGEDABOUIT!
Fast forward to my extreme obsessions with Orange is the New Black- aka I spent one entire weekend holed up in my house with my headphones on telling everyone to SHUSH so that I could binge watch the entire first season.
It is hard to adequately articulate why I adore this series so very much.
1) A look at what life is like when all your freedoms are taken away. We toured those bathrooms- which by the way are modeled after actual prison room bathrooms and they are shockingly GROSS. Being in prison you are stripped of everything- and it is quite a humbling experience.
2) The character development: Each of these women has a story, each has their own unique reasons for how they get locked up. They are not simply caricatures of prison inmates- they are real flesh and blood women- and they could be any of us.
3) The dark humor. It's hard to imagine that anything about prison could illicit a laugh- but this series manages to deliver a wry, dark humor that is both titillating, and highly relatable.
4) The protagonist's name is CHAPMAN. Need I say more?
