I’m an indoor person. In fact, my daughter practically broke out into happy tears when, I recently agreed to go on a family bike ride.
I have to admit: After dusting off my 10-speed, which has been hanging in the garage since we moved to Staten Island ten and a half years ago, it felt good, even liberating, being outdoors in the fresh air. And I wondered: Why didn’t I get my rather large derriere on a bike seat sooner?
Of course, I can give you a litany of excuses. But the truth is I was just lazy and it’s far easier to make excuses and watch marathon episodes of the “Golden Girls” in my living room than it is to suit up in a pair of biking shorts, strap on a helmet and get pedaling.
However, seeing the excitement my participation in a family bike engendered in my kids, I realized hanging with them outdoors is a privilege.
You’d think after ten years of being in this parenting game, I’d have it down to a science, but I’m forever learning to step up to the challenges of parenting and overcoming my inclination to be lazy!
So I’ve even set up a kiddie-sized picnic table right outside my front door, where they can dine al fresco. and while I let my kids hang out in the yard by themselves, I still grapple with the issue of feeling safe letting my kids play outside without adult supervision. So since I’m stuck out there with them until they’re ready to come in the good news is, I’ve found some ways to diversify the backyard experience to make it more pleasurable. For games and accessories that will keep you and your kids content, here are some of my favorite picks.
