Let me set the scene…
My son:”Mommy my hair is on fire”
Me:”Wait just one second honey, I need to like this post on facebook. Just go stick your head under a faucet.”
My son:”Mommy can you please feed me dinner I’m hungry”
Me:”In five minutes honey I just have to retweet this ADORABLE tweet from a Kardashian”.
My son: “Mommy there’s a strange man asking me to take a car ride with him what should I do?”
Me: “Honey can you please give mommy five minutes and then I can help you?”
Now let’s back up…BEEP BEEP.
Obviously these three contrived situations are JUST that CONTRIVED. Clearly if and when my kids need me I am present. And why pray tell am I even bringing this up?
Because apparently– as if i didn’t feel GUILTY enough about not spending enough time with my kids I get a pitch like this:
Are Parents with Tech Addiction Guilty of Child Neglect? The correlation between the growing dependence on technology and the increase in child neglect. Leading addiction psychologists have made the connection between adults who are addicted to their Blackberry, Iphone or Ipad, as being guilty of neglecting their child, and have therefore indirectly instilled technology addiction in their children
See here’s my philosophy– my mother-in-law GD REST HER SOUL z”l, smoked her entire pregnancy while carrying my husband– he’s 60 and still going strong. He tells me in the sixties-when he was raised- he barely saw or spoke to his parents- he had his basic needs met and well- he didn’t evolve into a serial killer. He was independent, he wasn’t hovered over… and I believe that type of parenting enabled him to become the man he is today- determined and focused- oh did I mention he went to medical school, residency and fellowship for 12 years???
The point is– Our kids will be all right- as long as we love them and they know we love them….right?? Thoughts? Oh and consider this your chance to unload your guilty mom thought for the day…I’ll go first. When my son was playing Fur Elise on the piano, I wasn’t really listening, I was tweeting instead..your turn!
