Having been inducted into part of parenthood that had me most terrified- raising a teenager– I can say with all certainty that it is a lesson in patience, knowing where your mute button is and learning how to exercise it at just the right moments and truly being available- at the most inopportune moments.
What I’m learning about parenting a teenager is this– you need to be able to give your teen the space to work out their own issues- but be there to lend a supportive ear wen they just want to vent.
AND NEVER OFFER UNSOLICITED ADVICE, or find a way to offer advice, that doesn’t seem like it is advice- rather just part of the organic conversation you and your teen are partaking in at that precise moment.
Parenting a teen is a delicate balance of listening without judgement while ever so gently reminding your kid that YOU ARE THE PARENT but you completely respect them and want them to exercise their independence- under your parenting guidance.
In other words it is a process and I think each day is another lesson in getting it right. I truly try my best NOT to pry ( or to seem as though I am not prying) and allow my daughter the space she needs-while I try to get as much intel as I can.
A few years ago she my teen drafted a A Summer Bucket List of Adventures. I thought- oh how cute and crafty! What a great idea- and something I can do with my now teen son too.
Keep reading for her list! Hopefully it provides you with some ideas to help your kids kick start their own Summer Bucket List of Adventures!
