How-To Festival Braids: Putting a Twist on a Classic

April 17, 2015 by Melissa Chapman Leave a Comment

Spring has arrived! It’s time to transform those dull, winter locks and bring some style back into your hair. And what do we all want; that windswept, natural just-rolled-around-on-the-beach tousled hair. We want those cheeks flushed-with-pink- goodness look  that  makes us appear as though we are naturally endowed with a glow. Heck I’m going to be 42 and no matter your hair texture or length, I believe braids are an easy and ageless look for high temperatures. In fact this childhood favorite hairstyle has quickly become a modern, chic and wearable hair do.

How-To: Put twist on a Classic with Edgy, Glamorously-Gritty Three Day Festival Braids

PRAVANA, a global salon professional hair care brand and leader in creative color, created a how-to video to help all of us achieve the best in braid looks. Starting with a half-up do with waterfall braids, transitioning into fishtails for next day hair and wrapping up day three with a coiled up do, these styles were designed to build off the prior day’s look. They are ideal for those upcoming summer road trips, weekend-long festivals, beach days or just every day. Created by hairstylist Kait Marie, these braids put a twist on a classic, turning it into an edgy, glamorously-gritty look.  Check out how-to video here with secrets to styling the perfect braid this summer.

And Keep reading for Written step-by-step instructions to achieve these three looks: a half-up do with waterfall braids, fishtails, and a festival worthy coiled up do.

The color technique, inspired by the fluidity and color-changes in mood rings, was done by celebrity stylist Danny Moon, the man responsible for Nicole Richie’s lavender locks and modeled EXQUISITELY by fashion blogger Francis Lola.

Day One:

Begin with clean, dry, smooth hair. Mist VIVIDS Color Protect Sealing Spray throughout hair. This mist is specially formulated with double UV protection to shield bright hair colors from fading in the sun.
Follow with NEVO Invisible Control for heat protection, texture, and memory long-lasting hold.
Backcomb at the scalp through the top of the head then spray lightly with NEVO Super Shape.
Working from the nape to the crown, take random 1” pieces of hair and curl loosely through the ends, leaving some pieces out. Backcomb the hair in the crown for full volume.

How To Hair Before

Starting in the front hairline, create a waterfall braid:
Start with three strands.
Cross the bottom strand over the middle strand.
Cross the top strand over the middle strand and allow to drop out.
Gather a new strand from the bottom
Repeat and continue into the crown
Loosen the braid, then fasten with a clip. Repeat through the other side.
Cross the two braids, then loosen hair through the crown. Secure the braids together with an elastic band.
Braid a loose strand then wrap around the elastic band and secure with a bobby pin.
Loosely curl the remaining hair through the sides.
Add accent braids, then tease through the ends and spray with NEVO Super Shape to secure.
Take small strands, flat-wrap around a small cylinder then flat iron and finger tease to add texture to the hair.

Day Two:

Start with Day One look.
Add NEVO Hydra Pearls to the mid-length and ends to tame, smooth and add shine to day two hair. Keep the waterfall braids secured.
Separate hair into two, leaving strands out in the front hairline.

How to create a fishtail braid

Create a fishtail braid:
Divide hair into two.
Pull a small piece from the outer edge of one side and cross over, gathering it into the other side.
Repeat this process on the other side.
Then working from side-to-side work your way down to the ends of the hair.
Repeat the fishtail braid on the other side.
Backcomb through the ends to secure.
Sprinkle NEVO Lived-In to the braid and pull the braid apart, creating texture, hold, and volume.
