Have you been experiencing hair loss? The reason for it might not be age or any other medical condition as you once may have thought. The cause might actually be the change in the season.
Hair loss is something that is extremely common in men, but what about women? Despite what you may think, the American Hair Loss Association says 40% of hair loss in the United States occurs in women.
Dr. Shawn Kwatra, the co-author of a study published in the British Journal of Dermatology, said that his patients often say they find themselves experiencing hair loss in the summer or fall.
Dr. Kwarta spoke with Medical News Today, saying, “We looked through the literature and found a few studies that looked at hair trichograms and noted increased shedding in the summer and fall months.”
For those looking to combat the loss of hair, there are a few things you can do right at home. Let's take a look at a few ideas.
Egg Hair Mask
Egg masks are used to promote hair growth. To create your own at-home egg mask, all you need is one egg, olive oil, and honey. Take the egg, a teaspoon of olive oil, and a teaspoon of honey, and mix them together to make a paste. Apply the mixture to your hair and wait for 20 minutes. After those 20 minutes, rinse the paste out of your hair with cold water and a shampoo that is mild.
Green Tea Wash
Since green tea is full of antioxidants, it can promote hair growth and help prevent hair loss. What you need to do is take two or three teabags in one or two cups of hot water and soak them, depending on the length of your hair. After the hot water cools down, pour the mixture into your hair and massage it into your scalp. After an hour, rinse the tea out of your hair.
Greek Yogurt and Honey Mixture
Finally, another at-home, do-it-yourself hair treatment that you can create to help prevent hair loss is greek yogurt and honey. Take two tablespoons of yogurt, one tablespoon of honey, and some lemon, and mix them into a bowl. After the ingredients are mixed together, brush them onto your scalp and roots and let it sit for 30 minutes before rinsing off with cold water. Do this once a week to ensure hair-loss prevention.
Many women turn to supposed “salon-quality” treatments to improve the health of their hair. For instance, most people are familiar with the highly controversial keratin treatments pushed by a number of beauty brands. However, many keratin treatments include the ingredient formaldehyde, which is a known cancer-causing substance that should be avoided as much as possible. That's why it's best to consult a health or cosmetology expert before using store-bought products. Or, you can choose to go the DIY route, incorporating the ideas above into your hair care regimen.
As many as 21 million women in the United States report experiencing hair loss. Take these easy at-home mixtures and apply them to your hair to prevent any future hair loss and to keep your hair smooth, soft, and shiny.
