Is Moon Milk is the Best Option to Help You Relax?

December 27, 2017 by Melissa Chapman Leave a Comment

We’re all familiar with the fact that milk is said to give us strong bones. We also know that milk is used for things like cheese and ice cream. In fact, about 9% of milk produced by U.S. dairy farmers is used to produce ice cream.

While we know that milk can help our bodies maintain strong bones, doing something to the milk can actually prove to make it a lot more helpful than we actually realized.

When you were a child, did you parents or guardians warm up milk and put it in a bottle? No, they didn’t just warm it up because they wanted to. Warm milk is actually a great resource used to help relax a person.

Often referred to as “moon milk” the all-natural remedy has gotten a makeover over the years. Now, health and wellness experts have started to mix the drink with different types of herbs and spices for even more benefits.

If you’ve been on Instagram lately, you may have seen the colored milk with tints of red and yellow all over your feed. The milk has been mixed with things such as turmeric to help with inflammation, black pepper which helps to keep one calm, and cherries which can be used as a sleep aid since they have a bit of a natural melatonin in them.

Dr. Lisa Young, nutritionist and dietitian, spoke with Moneyish about the updated remedy.

“Anything is better than sleep medicine because they’re addictive and you wake up groggy and feeling worse,” Young said. “Chamomile also helps relax you, and having it with a warm beverage like milk will calm you down. Just make sure you’re sitting down and not having it on the fly.”

Now, many people often turn to a glass of wine or other alcoholic beverage before bed to help them get a better night of sleep or to help them relax. However, Dr. Steven Feinsilver, the director of the Center for Sleep Medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, says you should stay away from alcohol before bed.

“Probably the worst mistake you can make is to use alcohol [before bed]. It causes abnormal sleep. It might make you fall asleep fast, but you won’t wake up feeling good,” Feinsilver said.

Feinsilver goes on to add that even though he suggests moon milk as a natural sleep remedy, you need to make sure to put your electronics down. He urges that the drink won’t be of any benefit if you don’t put your cellphones or tablets away.

“We all need at least an hour of relaxing time,” Feinsilver said.
