Musings on the New JDate and Hoping My Mother Meets her Match

December 23, 2015 by Melissa Chapman 3 Comments

So unbeknownst to my mom, we signed her up for a JDate account. My father, the man she met at the tender age of 15 and spent the next five decades plus of her life embroiled in an often tumultuous and intense love affair with, passed away several years ago and well we are still sort of reeling, licking our wounds trying to make sense of life without him and still feeling very fuzzy about everything.

Musings on the New JDate and Hoping My Mother Meets her Match

Death is so final and everyone expects you to continue to go through the motions, as if this permanent appendage that you’ve lived with your entire life has not been shockingly amputated in a most horrifying way. That’s how I see my father’s exit from my life and this world– still feels so surreal- and as if there is a phantom part of my body/my life that I feel is missing, but yet at times I still sense is there. It is so disconcerting and yet–life goes on….

So we figured we’d just see what was out there and sort of test the dating waters for my 67 year old mom. Our first stop– JDate. After browsing through profiles of men 70 years and older all I have to say is: My mother needs MORE HOBBIES. So many of these men are listing hiking, biking, sailing and kayaking on their dating profiles– so clearly my mother needs to step up her outdoor exercise game. But I digress. Perusing the site (which BTW I have now downloaded on my phone thanks to their  JDate apps which makes dating on the go so easy!) I am struck by some of its features which are definitely worth noting especially if you are someone you know is on the fence about getting a JDate account

  • A cleaner, streamlined user experience that simplifies interactions
  • New “daily matches” feature offering members a simple curated look at their best matches
  • Improved user experience for iPad/tablet users
  • Expanded and improved mobile presence and capabilities
  • Re-designed inbox to enable ease of interaction with other members

I also have to say these over 70 year old men- are NOT YOUR Grandfathers! They all DRIVE at night, they like the theater and yes they also like to Netflix and Chill ( Hand to Gd some of them write down Netflix and Chill on their bios! So I’m pretty jazzed by the pool of men my 67 year old mother has to pick from on the contend with on the new  JDate.

Of course my mother could care less about even looking at another man- or even contemplating being with another–but I hope at some point she will be able to put aside her grief and attempt to dip her pinky toe into this world. And once I showed her this hysterical JDate video which kind spoofs the whole dating online angst and frankly brings some much needed levity to all the high expectations and friends her to keep it all in perspective- I think she is leaning more towards dating with an “Eh”!!! attitude! To celebrate JDate’s new look, the brand worked with SNL’s Jon Rudnitsky to create this hilarious video about a dating app called “Eh” which SNL actually spoofed with their skit about a dating app called “Settl” check it out below:

And being that we are still in the thick of the holiday season ( I always say you have till the end of December to give a Chanukah gift ) this year why not Give the Gift of JDate , the site that is responsible for more Jewish marriages than all other online dating brands combined and even has a calendar for Travel & Events.

This post is written in partnership with JDate but as is always the case all opinions expressed are my own.

Its not just that dating site,…its every dating site and my 64 year old mother has been running into the same thing for the last 2-3 yrs she has been looking around.

The men either have ridiculous age/body expectations (and my mom looks GOOD for her age!) OR are health scared and looking for a future caregiver. Several that my mom has met for a coffee date, spill everything on the table first get together and want to know if she is willing to move in/remarry in near future. When my mom says she is just looking for a friend/boyfriend buddy to do stuff with and not quickly commitment – they say that’s not what they’ll looking for and disappear. Mentalities have reversed as they have aged. So sad.

don’t despair. If and when she’s interested, I hope she finds someone – either this way or the old-fashioned way.

So sorry for your loss. xoxo
