Yes, these past few days have been as hot as I imagine Dante’s Inferno to be. Just stepping outside to play a game of catch in our front yard I can almost feel my skin melting into the hot blades of grass that having been deprived water and are beginning to resemble bales of hay.
If you’ve read through this blog’s archives you’ll clearly denote that I am an equal opportunity weather complainer; I enjoy neither the very hot or very cold temps- and the only one grinning from ear to ear during this heat-wave is the president of Con Edison who must be happily lining his pockets with gold, after all the money I’ve sunk into my air conditioning bills since late June. But I digress, and so what do you do when you want to entice your kids with a bit of a respite from the sun? In other words you want to get them in doors at all possible costs short of drowning them in chocolate covered ice cream sundaes?
Take cover from the weather and geek-out with your kids over which superhero has the coolest super powers. Or go retro and sing the Scooby Doo theme song as you settle in to watch it on Netflix and begin speaking only in words that start with ‘R’!
I have to admit since we got Netflix it’s been pretty awesome connecting with my kids over cartoons I loved when I was younger (and STILL LOVE TODAY!) . It offers my kids a glimpse into what I was like as a kid ( I was big time into mysteries and solving crimes) and gives me a way to relive my childhood and enjoy these cartoons through their eyes! As it turns out, cartoons such as the new Netflix original series Inspector Gadget and Danger Mouse are giving parents and their kids loads to bond over. Not only are the old-school classics we all grew up on more popular than ever, but new reboots are introducing a whole new generation to some of our most favorite characters.
Another one of my ALL time Favorites is The SMURFS 2 ( I’ve got a pretty extensive collection and my kids love seeing these figures I have treasured dance across the screen on Netflix.
