It is hard to conceive that the ginger haired girl I gave birth to 16 years ago is currently STUDYING for her SATs and looking at colleges. It is hard to believe that once she leaves for college life as I’ve known it will completely change. I have tried to be the kind of mom that although it is completely antithetical to my nature- gives her all the space to grow and not feel like her mom is BREATHING down her neck and micromanaging her every decision and waking thought.
I knock before I enter her room, I try not to pry into her social interactions and to allow her the space to make mistakes because I know how crucial it is that she falls, and is able to self soothe and learn from those missteps. (even though doing so is so antithetical to my impulsive need to know everything nature).
It is hard for me to wrap my head around all of it- and mostly the fact that my girl is truly on her on journey and if I am lucky enough she will keep me along for the ride. So I am trying the get as many mommy and me moments in the time we have left where she is still mine if only for that brief moment in time. And while I am so not a girly girl ( aka I go to the salon for a quick peroxide and I’m out the door) I know my daughter is all about the blowout and the pampering and so while she is still here I am more than happy to oblige if it means we get some facetime.
So whether you are about to send your girl off to college like me or you just want more bonding time with your daughter here are a few reasons why you should TOTALLY book a day at the salon for you and your teen!
#1 A day at the salon means no phones allowed which either equals we look at each in silence or we actually talk and catch up on people magazine together and are some secrets get spilled ( much to a mom’s delight!)
#2 You finally get to tell your daughter how pretty she is and because she is feeling herself she will let you take endless boomerangs of her doing hair flips.
#3 Your daughter might just convince you against your wishes that you need to chop off three inches and you listen to her because honestly she has great beauty and fashion sense and you realize you can learn a thing or two from her.
#4 You finally get an excuse to drink coffee all day and have someone make it for you (aka your daughter).
#5 All of a sudden she starts telling you things (aka spewing) because that’s what happens when you go into a salon
#6 You learn about all the cool new memes and she schools you on words “gassed up” and “od” and “salty” and you finally learn that when men call you SHAWTY they aren’t referring to the fact that you are four feet eleven inches tall!
