Thank you to Hotel Indigo for providing us a complimentary stay to help us facilitate our Riverhead Long Island is the Best Place for a NY Family Staycation review
My dad, the man who was my first love, passed away on May 12, 2011 and while there are so many memories that pop into my head when I think of my father some of my most robust ones are the day trips he’d organize during the Summer months.
There was something utterly magical about packing up our station wagon, that we worried might not make it up those steep Catskill mountain hills, with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches my dad lovingly wrapped in tin foil and our big yellow thermos jug of lemonade. My dad would pack my siblings and me in the car, with the windows rolled down (who needs air condition he’d say!) and we’d head out on the open road with a day’s worth of adventures before us.
Sure I remember picnicking at national parks, convincing my dad to hop a few roller coasters with me, visiting zoos, and back in the eighties, living in Brooklyn we even made our way over the Verrazano Bridge and canoed at Clove Lakes Park, but those were just the destinations. The real stuff is what transpired during those long, often times sweaty, and not enough leg room fighting over the family walkman car rides. What I remember most was listening to my dad croon to his favorite oldies radio station, as he regaled us with stories from his childhood and feeling his love envelop us in that wagon. So as we emabrak on planning those summer vacations indulge in an old-fashioned road trip with your kids to these and relish every moment and I ‘m sharing why Riverhead Long Island is the Best Place for a NY Family Staycation and a few places you need to explore while you are there!
Riverhead Long Island is the Best Place for a NY Family Staycation
First up check into
If you are itching to get to Long Island this summer but dreading the sticker shock price of the Hamptons – RIVERHEAD is the staycation of your dreams. At the Hotel Indigo® Long Island East End hotel you get all the beauty of Long Island ( this is me sitting in their beachy inspired rooms which feature the comfiest beds) in the heart of the North Fork which is super close to the Hamptons while getting to be in the midst of wine country and OUTLET SHOPPING which is just five minutes from your hotel door!
Not only are they pet-friendly but they also offer a stunning poolscape and the most romantic outdoor wood-burning fireplace.
Their innovative menu at Bistro 72, serves seasonal farm-to-table dishes, local wine pairings, and even vodka distilled from potatoes grown on Long Island.
We also had a chance to enjoy a wine tasting at Osprey Dominion Vineyards and it was GLORIOUS! These three were just observing!
The Long Island wine region is located at approximately the same latitude as the great wine growing regions of France and the U.S. (Napa Valley).
Being surrounded, yet sheltered, by both the LI Sound and Peconic Bay, At Osprey’s they truly believe their location and the complexity of their farming soil contributes significantly to the quality and character of their grapes, and hence, their wines.
And after touring their vineyards and being treated to a wine tasting I can tell you– THIS IS THE PLACE for a wine lover!
We then headed over for some live music and the coolest cider and yummy fresh food at The Riverhead Ciderhouse
Riverhead Ciderhouse is an 8,000 square foot facility with two floor-to-ceiling fireplaces that houses a tasting room, retail space and café, adorned in a décor of a natural rustic and brick setting.
They serve fresh local produce indigenous to Long Island as part of the “Farm to Fork Revolution”, as well as gourmet pizzas, sandwiches and other seasonal fares with a single goal in mind – to support their local farmers, culinary experts, artists and customers.
With deep previous experience in wine making, their Cider Master Greg Gove is now producing ciders that uses New York-grown apples in three delicious flavors: Benjamin’s Best, Razmatazz and their Reserve cider. These ciders offer a natural gluten free option with no added sugars.
Then we also had a chance to check out Garden of Eve Farm & Market founded in 2001 by environmental advocates Chris and Eve Kaplan-Walbrecht, which is dedicated to providing delicious organic vegetables, fruits and beautiful flowers and to “making changes in the world by living them.”
Garden of Eve’s organic vegetables and flowers are available from their Organic Farm Marketa nd Garden Center at 4558 Sound Avenue in Riverhead, farmers markets on Long Island and in Brooklyn, and through Community Supported Agriculture shares on Long Island, Queens, Brooklyn, and Manhattan.
