Congrats to our winner Shoshana!
I am not a math person. In fact I can still vividly recall my painful and embarrassing childhood academic math experiences; when in fifth grade my teacher taped a list written in dark red ink of all the students in the class who failed their math test and yours truly was on there boasting a 43, or when while sitting at my second go round of the SAT's I literally started to cry because I was so overwhelmed and out of my comfort zone and league when trying in vain to get the math portion done.
So suffice it to say when I helped to host several of my favorite blogger friends at Liberty Science's brand spankin new Math Midway exhibit, I was actually a bit intimidated and excited at once, but also questioned just how sexy and fun the concept of math could be… and could it really appeal to kids and to me an adult who has struggled with math for a lifetime?
Well readers I can safely tell you- Math Midway at Liberty Science Center not only educates, but does so in such a fun way-you and your kids will be hard pressed not to walk out of there feeling smarter and dare I say just a bit happier!
Here are all the deets
Math Midway exhibit at Liberty Science Center runs from: October 7, 2011 – January 22, 2012
What this exhibit does is try and get across this underlying concept; the fact that Mathematics illuminates patterns that abound in our lives, providing clarity and structure. At the Math Midway, curated by the Museum of Mathematics (which will have its grand opening in 2012 at 11 East 26th Street in Manhattan with a mission to enhance public understanding and perception of mathematics) which made its debut at the 2009 World Science Festival Street Fair in New York City families are encouraged to explore surprising aspects of math in the Math Midway, in an interactive, hands-on tour of mathematical concepts, all in a colorful, carnival style.
Just a few of the things your kids will go gaga for:
-Riding on a square-wheeled tricycle to discover why the ride is so smooth.
-Playing the Wheel of Chance – Pick three cards – which one is most likely to come up when you spin the wheel? Keep spinning until you've got a winner!
-Experimenting with the Ring of Fire, using a laser beam to find hidden shapes within shapes.
-Marveling at mind-bending mirrors.
-Creating a giant pattern or “tessellation,” of monkeys in a puzzle-like pattern.
-Getting into the swing of harmonics with the Mysterious Harmonograph, which creates beautiful swirling patterns on paper.
