When it comes to being a parent, after clocking 16 years in the trenches I can say with all certainty that even if there was a rule book when it came to raising kids- the amount of curve balls your kids will throw at you at the most random and unexpected moments could never fully be covered in any way shape or form. Parenting is the ultimate adventure in flying by the seat of your pants and facing every unpredictable obstacle with the greatest amount of grit. And while parenting my brood has not been without the occasional bump, bruise and trip to the ER, I know it goes with the territory that kids will have the occasional ailment, accident and minor chronic malady.
My daughter 16 is a fair-haired redhead who had a dental scare with an abscess at 7 that made her look like she had a swollen eye. She had her permanent front tooth knocked out by a bathroom stall door, and many years and dental bills later she a fairly unnoticeable false tooth. She had plantar fasciitis, an inflammation on the sole of her foot from track, which has resolved. But with this lil ginger -for as long as I can remember she has had skin issues. From the time she was an infant we needed to use special laundry detergent.
Since the time she was about 3 or 4 she has had eczema in the folds of her elbows and knees which is a terrible dryness, redness and itching that she gets all year but especially in the summers when she goes swimming. We have brought her to doctors tried every home and over the counter moisturizer and remedies including steroid creams and ointments but this always seems to come back, some years worse than others.

We have had varied success but now have become aware of EpiCeram®, a prescription medication that gets to the root of the problem, which is the defective skin barrier. In eczema, also called atopic dermatitis, the skin barrier gets disrupted and it loses the natural moisture and allows microorganisms and allergens to get into the outer layers of skin and causes dry, red itchy areas that will not respond to typical moisturizers.
EpiCeram is a leading prescription product that has the ability to help repair and heal the skin barrier through a unique mode-of-action different from other medications and eczema treatments. Only EpiCeram contains the skin’s natural level of 3 essential lipids -ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids – which are reduced in patients with eczema or atopic dermatitis. EpiCeram is steroid-free, fragrance-free, noncomedogenic, paraben-free, and propylene glycol-free. It also normalizes the pH of the skin, which is affected by swimming in chlorinated pools. When you get out of the pool EpiCeram is applied after showering and drying the affected areas. If going out in the sun usesunscreen, but apply EpiCeram first.
The company that produces EpiCeram, PuraCap Pharmaceutical, also makes a Lip treatment with the same healing ingredients as its treatment for eczema. It is an effective treatment for chapped lips. As parents our kids are always getting chapped lips in winter and summer. Now there’s EpiCeram-L Lip Care the first lipid-based product for chapped Lips! EpiCeram-LLip Care contains important lipids that penetrate for real dry lip relief to replenish and heal. Its unique delivery system allows for controlled-release of these important lipids. Suffice it to say our ginger is pleased as punch about EpiCeram and in case you need em here are some tips to stop the ITCH and to help your kids get the MOST out of summer despite their eczema!
- Use a sunscreen that contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide when outdoors. It sits on top of the skin rather than being absorbed.
- Apply an Rx skin barrier repair product, like EpiCeram®, before going into a pool.
- After swimming, shower and cleanse with a mild soap, and then immediately reapply EpiCeram®.

And when it comes to swimming no kid with eczema should have to miss out! While Eczema flares are more than a winter problem and can happen at any time of the year, but you’re also prone in the summer thanks to heat and chlorine in pools. What’s more, swimming pools are kept at a high pH which can throw off skin’s natural pH balance, further compromising the natural protective skin barrier. EpiCeram ® is packed with essential lipids to repair skin’s barrier. It’s also formulated with a pH of 5 to normalize skin’s pH, which is naturally in the 5.0-6.0 range, balancing the negative effects of swimming in chlorinated pools.

It sounds like a very reliable treatment for eczema. It’s common among kids and it can get very irritating. I’m glad you have EpiCeram to rely on from now!
My oldest has eczema on his hands, so I will have to get some of this for him. It sounds like just what he needs.
Thank you for sharing this product! I don’t have eczema, but I’m sure this post is helping a lot of people that do.

Luckily we don’t have any eczema in my family, but my good friend has struggled with it recently. I will have to share this with her and see if it can help.
The only eczema we’ve ever encountered is when my kids were babies. Luckily, it went after infanthood. But we could definitely use the lip treatment, all of us.
Eczema can be a very challenging skin condition to deal with, especially in the summer. You really have to work extra hard to protect your skin and keep it properly hydrated.
