My husband says I have a tendency to lean towards my natural proclivity to GUILT MY KIDS into submission. It’s almost as if, at times, I can’t help it. It’s not like I wield a whip and beat them, or force them to wash the windows. Rather I choose to guilt them into doing things that permit me to reap enjoyment (even if my 16 year old thinks that the only reason I MADE her practice piano was to TORTURE her).
And until my kids leave the nest I will do everything in my power (be it my birthday, mother’s day or any other ordinary day) to revel in the sweet nectar of their youth. So it is with pleasure that I share ways to Revel in Your Children and Capture those Memories!
#1 Remember that Mother’s day, Your birthday is the one day you can ask my kids to perform their piano duet over and over and over again.
My daughter has accused me of MAKING her play the piano as a form of torture while my son loves it. I tell her, “One day you will thank me for giving you piano lessons.” To which she responds, “I don’t think so.” And I know in her response she secretly HATES me but as Betty Davis once so ELOQUENTLY said:
#2 Request all the selfies you want ( for as long as your can!)
Being the mother of a teenager is no easy feat. It is a lesson in patience, of BITING one’s tongue and remembering the phrase- THIS TOO SHALL PASS. I’ve made a pact with my daughter NOT to blog about her– because her story is hers, not mine. But when it comes to selfies-well all bets are off.
#3 Indulge in being the recipient of small gestures of unadulterated love that will make your heart MELT.
Getting a bouquet of flowers picked from my lawn from my 12 year old boy who told me when he handed them to me that, “these are for you mommy because you are as pretty as a flower” will never ever get old. And watching my husband help our son get his suit and tie look just right- well- definitely a memory worth capturing!
#4 Marinate in your furbabies and enjoying their precious gifts.
It is hard for me to comprehend that my rescue ShihTzus have been with me for so many years. Watching my older one navigate his senior years has been so painful and bittersweet- and as I watch my almost two year old rescue – it is even more clear to me that the joy and unconditional love these furbabies have and continue to give me is unmatched.
And with the holidays approaching we have to be mindful to make memories as one day we will only have the pictures to help us remember our kids in all their precious youth!
I think one of the problems of the technology age we live in is that many of us do not save the pictures we take and lose a lot of valuable moments. And yes I’ve been in the unfavorable position of wanting to take pictures – and being unable to do so because the memory is full (and being a picture hoarder I have SUCH a hard time deleting any of my memories!) And what happens to all those great shots and impromptu moments? A lot of them are looked at, forgotten and lost because we don’t have a system to save them.
