Why Your Family Should Watch Out for Chemical Products

Irritation to the Skin and Throat

If you are feeling symptoms of allergies, something may be lurking inside your house. Common household items that can cause irritation to the skin and throat include air fresheners and household foggers such as bug bombs, furniture polish, and drain cleaners. When you breathe in the fumes from these items, they can irritate your skin, eyes, and throat while also causing major damage to your organs such as your kidneys, stomach, and liver. Some chemicals in these items to be aware of include ammonia, naphtha, nitrobenzene, petroleum distillates, and phenol.

Lower IQ levels

Is your shampoo making you less intelligent? It could be. Watch out for the chemical phthalates that can be found in everyday items such as shampoos, laundry detergent, soap, nail polish, and lotions. Plastic is another item that can contain toxic chemical phthalates. Do not microwave your food in plastic that can release the toxins more directly into your food. Forego plastic and switch to glass containers.

Thyroid Disorders

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers can be found in baby pillows, insulation, TVs, and computers. When you think about it, many of the items listed are items we may use on a daily basis within our homes. These chemicals are often present in older furniture or foams, and they’re something to be mindful of when you are shopping for secondhand household items or need to make some updates to your house.

Sick Pets

Pets are attracted to different smells and items that could make them sick. One common household item that pets are drawn to is antifreeze. Antifreeze tastes sweet to pets, and they may ingest it by licking or drinking the substance. Antifreeze is deadly when ingested. Not only can it be harmful to you, but it can also cause harm to your dog or cat.

Cancer-Causing Agents

Cleaners to eradicate mold and mildew can contain chemicals such as formaldehyde and sodium hypochlorite. These chemicals can cause fluid to develop in your lungs, and they can release carcinogens. Furniture polish has also been linked to skin and lung cancer. In addition, chemicals contained in car wash and car polish products have also been found to contribute to the development of lung cancer. Have you discovered that lice are a problem at your child’s school? Be mindful of the lice shampoo you purchase. Chemicals in this type of shampoo may also be agents that have been connected to the development of cancer.

Many of the products listed have to do with cleaning your home. Does it mean that you can’t do any cleaning? Is it time to jump for joy? No, your house still needs to be cleaned. It’s a matter of finding the right cleaning supplies to do the job without making you sick.

Fantastic companies and products exist that can help you with your home cleaning dilemmas. Amway is a company that received a Safer Choice recognition in 2017 for environmentally safe products. By purchasing products such as laundry, surface, and dish care products that have the Safer Choice Seal by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from Amway, you can be assured that these products won’t contain harmful chemicals that you don’t want to introduce into your home.

Today, consumers like you need to be conscious of the products you buy. Being discerning and mindful of your options and the implications each choice carries can help make your home a healthy place for you and your family.

It’s always good to check and make sure that nothing that we have in the house is harmful to our kids especially since we have curious toddlers. The less I have to worry about the better!

When you really break it down, there are so few safe choices in the mainstream market. Even something like coloring your hair is so harmful! It really stinks!

It is amazing the vast amount of chemicals found in American homes. Don’t even get me started on what’s lurking in carpets and paint. Choosing Safer Choice, Made Safe, and those recommended by EWG are a great start to cleaning up the toxins.

I ended up using cloth diapers because I didn’t like the idea of all the chemicals in diapers. There are just so many everywhere now! It is hard to avoid.

We converted to non-toxic household supplies years ago. I have an autoimmune disease and the chemicals in certain bath and body products started irritating my skin. That’s when I learned about all the chemicals in all of our products. It stinks that the FDA is not more strict with what can go in our products.
