Cost-Effective Tips for Making Your Backyard Paradise Last Longer

May 14, 2018 by Melissa Chapman 17 Comments

Backyards are often a place of peace and happiness. It’s a place where a homeowner can go to relax after a long day at work and kick their feet up with a glass of wine. It’s a place of serenity that allows the homeowner to forget they’re even sitting directly behind their home. It takes a lot of hard work and money to make a backyard a place you find in magazines. It would be such a shame to only be able to enjoy it for a year or so and then see it collapse in ruins. Most homeowners want a backyard that will last them for many years to come, and to achieve that goal, there are a few Cost-Effective Tips for Making Your Backyard Paradise Last Longer.

Cost-Effective Tips for Making Your Backyard Paradise Last Longer

Chances are, reusing what you already have seems like a good idea. Realtor.com says if your trees and shrubs have gotten a little wild over the years, take some time to clean those up before doing anything else. They say that it’s the most inexpensive way to liven up your yard and make it last you for more than just a year. You may also consider heading to your local home improvement store and picking up some gluten pre-emergent herbicide. While gluten is a no-no for many human diets, it’s a great tool for killing weeds before forming roots.

Concrete stamping is another cost-effective way to improve your backyard. HGTV says the stamping makes the concrete look more expensive than it actually is. The stamping is fully customizable, so you’re able to design your concrete however you want, within your budget. Since you will be using concrete, you know it’s going to last you quite some time. You may also choose to place items on top of the concrete that will add some value to your yard such as a hot tub. A well-constructed hot tub can last at least 20 years, so you can look forward to a life of soaking in the water while enjoying your concrete work.

Instead of consistently worrying about how your grass is going to look from year to year, why not eliminate it completely? Just because it’s your backyard, that doesn’t mean you have to have grass that can brown and become unruly. The Today Show says get rid of the real stuff and replace it with some turf. It’s a low-maintenance way to ensure that your backyard will be looking just as fresh in nine years as it did the day you installed the turf. Stick some posts in the turf and hang some LED lighting along your yard to create a relaxing vibe. LEDs use only 15% of the energy that a standard halogen light uses and provides up to 85% more light output.

Many homeowners love the idea of spending time in their backyard. But, to make it a place of serenity that can be enjoyed for many years to come, there are a few things that can be done cost-effectively. Grab some turf, some shrubbing tools, and some concrete and get to work!

I would love to get some turf to replace the grass in my yard. We have little shade and the sun is always killing my grass by mid-summer anyways, so I say that we should just get rid of it.

We won’t ever be getting rid of our grass. We have a beautiful back yard with great furniture and a fire pit. Play area and we spend tons of time out there.

Throwing some stones or concrete stamping may be a good idea. I would personally not like to replace grass with turf. I can see why some people may choose that option in areas where it’s hard to grow the real thing.

We need to improve our backyard. It looks rather sad at the moment. But we usually have tons of kids back there, so that doesn’t help. One day we’ll make it look nicer!

Hubby is on vacation this week and is actually doing yard work again today. My youngest is gluten-free and I didn’t know about gluten and weeds.

There really is something wonderful about getting to relax in your garden. I have to admit I’m not very good at gardening but I do try my best to look after ours as best as I can.

I love that newly paint wood deck ours is almost the same except it was open. We are thinking of putting a sun roof so we can still use it even the outside is 90 deg.

I’ve thought of going with turf. I can’t even imagine how much time and energy it would save my husband and I from mowing, trimming, etc.

I can’t imagine having turf in the yard. While not having to mow would be nice I don’t think it would be as soft or inviting as real grass.

I love the turf idea but our neighborhood covenant doesn’t allow it. I bet they might consider it if it was only in the back yard. Hmmmm.

These are all awesome tips on how to maintain your backyard better. I think it’s a good idea to get rid of the grass if you’re unable to take care of it or if it’s often not growing the way it’s supposed to.

I would love to transform my backyard with a fire pit and some pathways. We just planted new peach trees, and my apricot tree is about to be ready to pick fruit. I’m so excited about that!
