Do You Know When a Job Is Worth Relocating For? 4 Signs It’s Time To Move

June 4, 2018 by Melissa Chapman 2 Comments

It can be intimidating when you’re offered a new job in a new city. How do you know if the job is worth picking up your whole life and moving? Do You Know When a Job Is Worth Relocating For? 4 Signs It’s Time To Move.

Do You Know When a Job Is Worth Relocating For? 4 Signs It’s Time To Move.

You’re ready for a new lifestyle

Before you got offered a new job in a new city, you might have already started fantasizing about a life change. Maybe you already thought about moving to a new city and starting fresh. Roughly six out of ten, or 63%, adults have moved to a new community at least once in their life, while 37% have never left their hometown. Do you want to be a member of the first group and not the second one? It may be a good idea to move to a new city and accept that new job.

You will have more potential to grow

Often times when you stay at one place for a long time, you have the opportunity to move up in the company. If you have been at your current job for many years with no sign of promotion for the next five to 10 years, then it may be time to move. You want to make sure you have a lot of outlets for professional development at the new job before you move, though. Otherwise, you will be in the same position.

You’re currently stuck in a rut

Do you feel like you are burned out or stuck in a rut with your current job? You’re not alone. According to data from the Current Population Survey from 2015 to 2016, nearly 6.2 million workers, or 4% of the total workforce, transferred from one occupational group to another. One of the biggest reasons people change careers is because of burn out. If you feel like you’re sitting in a rut in your current job, you should probably relocate and start fresh.

You will make more money

Money may be one of the more obvious reasons to relocate for a job, but it is still a valid one. According to Business Insider, you should earn 10% to 20% more than your current salary when you are changing jobs in the same city. However, when moving to a new city, the increase in salary will depend on the cost of living in the new city compared to your current one.

Moving to a new city requires a lot of resources. For example, you probably need to hire one of the nearly 12 million trucks, rail cars, locomotives, and vessels on the transportation network to help you trek your belongings from one city to another. Before you do that, though, make sure the move will be worth it professionally, financially, and personally.

Great points all around — especially about personal growth and financial opportunity being major relocation drivers. One more angle to consider before making the move is how you’ll manage your finances in a new city — especially if the cost of living is higher or your income structure changes.

That’s where tools like Traders Union (https://tradersunion.com/) come in handy. Whether you’re looking to stretch your salary further, start investing, or compare financial services in your new location, it’s a reliable resource to stay smart with your money before, during, and after a move.
