It’s a Valentine’s day LOVE FEST giveaway (we’re heating things up )

January 21, 2011 by Melissa Chapman 30 Comments

Congratulations Christy @ more than mommy you are the winner!

While my husband and I are trying to get through this strange period in our marriage, what I know for sure (thank you Oprah)  is that above all else we are committed to raising our kids as a team.

Once you have kids with someone- I think the whole marriage game and your investment in it completely changes. And when I get a letter from my nine-year-old daughter, in which she writes, “Mommy when you and daddy fight it makes me think you don’t love me and Jackson (her brother),” well it kind of puts things into perspective… real fast.

I realize that marriage is nothing like the Hollywood style version I’d envisioned; it’s far more than roses, holding hands and having a permanent Saturday might date.  It’s about compromising, sometimes swallowing your feelings and sometimes fighting fair is much easier to type than to actually put into practice.

And just when I feel like maybe having to work so hard at something just isn’t what I signed up for I see my kids and this little family unit that my husband and I worked so hard to bring to fruition. I watch my husband, as he does homework with my daughter and lets my son climb all over him, karate chop him and sit on his head and doesn’t so much as wince. He is such a hands-on dad, fully entrenched in all aspects of our kid’s lives giving them every bit of his heart on an intensely visceral level.

So this Valentine’s Day, in addition to the hearts, flowers, candies and the baubles   I hope I get (c’mon I’m a girl and I’ve been spoon-fed these Valentine’s Day must-gets for almost 37 years) what  I’m most interested in is luxuriating in the familial love my husband and I have managed to negotiate, in spite of our recent bout of problems. And, what I know for sure, really what better way to learn and explore more about the facets of my husband than with a few incredible journals, books and love games…

And the very best part—because I believe in the healing power of words and their ability to bond a couple in ways nothing else can I’m incredibly excited to be able to giveaway- to one lucky winner -SIX TOTAL eye candy books and journals from one of my most favorite publishers Chronicle Books

Slow dancing on a boat house. He broke it off with me a few days later which lead me to reconnect with my dream guy- this will be our first valentines day.

worst valentine's day experience is when he introduce me to his family but no one really cares. They are all busy with their own respective lives. I wish not all families are like that.

My worst Valentine's Day was when an ex accidentally slammed the car door on my hand and broke my finger.

My then boyfriend cooked a great meal to come home to the day before Valentine's Day because he was working the next day. The following day I found out he had actually gone to see the girl he was cheating on me with.

My worst Valentine's Day was when it seemed everyone in the office was getting flowers. I didn't have a valentine and got nothing that day.

I came down with a stomach virus on Valentine's Day and actually threw up at the table, at a fancy restaurant, in front of my date, on my new red velvet dress. It's been ten years since this happened and I still cringe when I think about it!

My boyfriend (at the time) gave me two beautiful angelfish in a little tank for Valentine's Day. In typical form, he hadn't really done any research on it and had no idea that angelfish are tropical and need a tank heater. They were dead within a week, a definite harbinger for our relationship.

A simple present of roses and a night at a favorite restaurant. It's not so much what we did but the company was priceless.

    Worst experience?

After he hinted around for weeks about a "special present", I expected something wonderful. Especially because I'd been leaving magazines and catalogs open to pictures of pearls, which I craved.

Instead, he presented me with a shopping bag that contained a large brown leather briefcase. Men's. Used! I thought perhaps it was going to lead up to a joke about a bag, and then he'd whip out a gorgeous purse, my *real* present. Or maybe my *real* present was the pearls I'd admired, hidden within the recesses of the old brown briefcase.

Nope. Turned out that the hideous used men's briefcase was my *real* present, my only present. His explanation? He said he thought I'd like it. He wouldn't tell me where he bought it, either, but it looked as though he'd plucked it out of his dad's closet.

The gift showed me that, despite all the time we'd been together, he didn't understand me at all. Needless to say, it was the beginning of the end. He is now an ex.
